Those of you who own the IH M-5H-6 probably know that the replacement filter to fit the original Bendix fuel filter (mounted on the frame below the driver door next to the battery box) is not available from any source. However, there is a modern filter that fits perfectly, with a small modification. Use the Luberfiner LFF200, and search for that or whatever is specified by interchange with other brands at your local auto parts store. (Application is actually a 5.7 liter 350 diesel fuel filter for 80s and 90s vintage GM passenger cars.) The filter is a paper element type like all modern filters, and has a hole in one end. You will need to drill the center of the other end with a hole to fit the 3/8" stud that holds the filter and bowl on. Chamfer the hole, and blow out any stray bits of metal. Push the end with the factory hole onto the stud first, and you will notice that the step on the end fits the pocket in the main filter body perfectly. The lower bowl-shaped washer and nut should fit too, and th
en put the bowl on. You now have a new modern high-efficiency filter instead of that old brass one that is plugged up. I speculate that the M426 and M425 trucks (which were made by IHC, Kenworth, and Marmon-Herrington, and were known as the M-542-11 and M-542-9) used the same Bendix bowl-type filter assembly, in which case this filter will fit those as well. Just thought folks would like to know.
