I've had those kinds of problems on many of my older vehicles also. What
usually is the problem is either bad or older gas. Or most consistently,
the points get a little corroded and don't aways make consistently. The
most reliable solution I have found is to upgrade the ignition to a
Pertronix type pointless setup. I also put a MSD 6 ignition setup on an
old cranky Chevy van I have. The MSD puts out so much spark power, that I
can often get it running even on older gas. A hot ignition can overcome a
lot of other minor problems. I have yet to do this to my M51 dump, but I'm
close. I think the Pertronix kit that fits a 1956 GMC 270 Civy engine will
also fit the Continental R6602 distributor. Pulling out those 10 screws or
so to get into the distributor just to touch up the points with a file is a
waste of time.
