Two Russians were detained by custom guards June 10 after attempting to
smuggle in two armored cars from neighboring Belarus, Interfax reported.
The suspects were transporting two reconnaissance military vehicles through
village roads, in an attempt to avoid the border between Russia and Belarus,
a source in the state border inspectorate told Interfax.
After hearing the reports, special police and road patrol joined in an
effort to detain the smugglers.
The military vehicles had belonged to Belarus' Defense Ministry, but were
transferred to a smaller regional bureau for road control in capital Minsk.
The smugglers' documents showed that they had bought the vehicles there
legally - the suspects said they bought the vehicles for 120,000 rubles
(over $4,000) for a fishing and hunting trip.
The smugglers are being charged with failure to pay customs tariffs, for
which the penalty is a fine. But as the source told the news agency, if the
Russian Defense Ministry finds that the vehicles may be used for actual
combat, the suspects may face a prison sentence of up to seven years.
