I saw some notes on the HULL Compass..
First... They are pretty easy to fix.
The HULL Compass was designed for the big floating Deuce -- the DUKW....
Then..as in everything the Army had in WW2 -- everyone wanted one.. They
became very popular on all vehicles. Especially the little swimmer jeep and
the Jeep itself.
The bakelite case and the globe (jar) are easily separated.
The "jar" can be popped out of the bakelite case with a pocket knife...stick
the knife alongside the jar - and under the edge..twist the knife and the
jar pops right out. The bottom (lid) screws off just like a jar top..the top
has a gasket inside. They tend to dry out and shrink..then leak...
I had hundreds of these suckers at one time...every single one of the damn
things leaked... The trick to fill them is a nice clear lamp oil...in a good
sized pot.....submerge the whole jar..with the new gasket...and close it up
under the liquid..so that you get NO BUBBLES. The HULL Compass company was
in business for many - many years. After the war you could buy compasses for
your car...
They made a few real hard to find compasses... Ever see a WHITE one..for the
Mountain Troops.. I have one..
Good luck...Gene
