Every state has a "federal surplus property" co-ordinator, generally in the
state capitol. They are the guys who screen the surplus equipment, (not
limited to vehicles) and decide which gov't subdivision will get what. They
publish a current list that is available to fire depts, etc.

In each local govt subdivision, a person is appointed as the contact to
acquire equipment through the state office. The equipment may not always be
physically within the state. As an example, the guy in Albany NY will often
refer fire districts in Long Island, NY to the Groton, CT navy base where
trucks are screened and stored. Our fire dept got two deuces, an extra winch
and 7 new singles on wheels for $1800.

As far as spare parts, occasionally a large item, such as a power pack or
transfer case will be available. However, in my experience, both as a local
govt (fire district) contact person, and as a military vehicle parts dealer,
the best place for NOS spares is in the private sector. There are millions
of spare parts out there, available to govt users and the general public. I
don't think the supply is endless, but it won't dry up in our lifetime.

Personally, I recommend Army Surplus of Dodge City for M-series parts. Ask
for Roger, and tell him Arthur sent you. His prices are the best around,
and he is very cordial and helpful. (Oh, and there's that other guy who
sells power steering and hubs, too.)
