By design, head bolts will stretch slightly once installed, and need to be re-torqued once the engine has been warmed up. The bolts, however can only stretch so far. If they're reused several times, they will hit the limit to which they'll stretch. So, they won't fit correctly (hence "false torque readings") and may cause improper sealing or even right out fail; causing another gasket leak.
Replacing the bolts, when doing all that work, is fairly cheap insurance. Spend the few bucks and make sure that head fits back on the way that it should. The service manual should show you the correct torque and torque-down pattern. You usually want to install and torque the bolts starting from the middle and then out in a radial pattern.

something else for your consideration - most diesel truck repair shops
replace the bolts that hold head on if head is removed for most any reason -
something about getting false torque readings with used bolts.

Thanks to Bob and J for their comments. Does anyone
else have advice? How about where you got your
gaskets? Is there any validity to the story about the
"TD" block using higher torque? If so what is the
torque anyway? Are there any tidbits of information
to make the job easier? Feel free to contact me off
list also. I'm starting to lean towards replacement
now rather than later. Any thoughts are welcome.
Thanks
Marc
