The generator and the regulator act as one unit. The reason they are
physically separate is historical: The original electro-mechanical
regulators were so big and required adjustmets so often, that they were a
separate unit. With the advent of electronics, the regulator CAN be built
inside the generator, and some (Delco, e.g.) are built that way.
