Hi
Before you get into this project to deep you need to ask some questions
re. your truck. Remember the M1009 as it is designed is very robust and
capable even in desert heat conditions. We had many of these things in
the 90-91 Desert Storm pulling small M416 (and captured Soviet built GAZ
equiv) trailers all over the desert in Iraq and Kuwait in the 125 degree
summer heat with no problems. That doesn't mean that issues don't come
up just like with any other trucks. If the original cooling system is
ALL performing as designed then the truck will work fine under normal
towing loads and temperatures. If you have fan clutch problems,
radiator blockages, thermostat problems, etc you will see high
transmission temps and can plan on transmission damage. If you want to
see what your 3L80 Hydramatic is doing then by all means throw on a
gauge. That will tell all. If you want to give your truck some
insurance put on an external cooler, especially if you are towing a
trailer larger than the M416 or M101. The biggest thing is keep your
cooling system serviced and operating as designed and you will have no
problems in normal service. You stated that you had your radiator
serviced so it should be AOK.

Jim,
OK. So I should upgrade the Transmission cooling system;
What Transmission Cooler Kit do you recommend for the CUCV?
I've recently got my Radiator completely overhauled;
Could I use a new Tranny cooling system in conjunction with the original
system? If not - why not? If I were to dispense with the original
tranny cooling system can I get a full size rad to replace the combined
rad that's in my truck? Auto trans is the exception over here and not
the rule so apologies if the questions seem naive!
Can you get Tranny Temperature gauges? Would it be a good Idea to remove
the viscous fan and install a Kenlowe Electric Fan kit for efficiency
and economy?

Jim........in Ireland
