I have used a bic pen body and a rubber vacuum hose. Put the pen
body in the hose, and put the hose to the ear, and probe around
for the noise. You will hear all kinds of things. This is how I
determined where my ticking/squeaking noise was coming from. Not
the head gaskets or pilot/throwout bearing as many did guess, but
a vibration between the front fender and the body where a bolt
was buggered up and missing.
