I'm no mechanic but 60 hours of work to remove and install an engine seems
excessive! Shop rates around here are $75. That's $4500 plus machine shop
fee's. YIKES! Maybe he's padding the hours and charging you less an hour or
something. If no one replies I can ask a buddy of mine to look up an engine
install in his shop time book tomorrow. Last time I pulled an engine,
installed a new long block and put it all back together it took me about 20
hours. I have a fairly full set of tools but I'm not a professional
mechanic. I do computers for a living! LOL This was on a newer computer
controlled sensor ridden vehicle. Not a simple older mill.

I own a 1952 GMC XM211 dump truck (automatic). When working with the
truck last week on my farm in Central New Hampshire, the engine began
making some awful clacking and knocking sounds. I asked my mechanic to
stop by (he has worked on the truck before) and evaluate the situation.
He believes that some bearing are bad in the lower section of the engine
and that head may require some work as well. He believes that it might
be more cost effective to replace the current engine than try to rebuild
the current one (I do not have space, tools nor the expertise to do it
myself). He estimates about 60 hrs of work plus cost for the shop to
re-bore cylinder, etc. Furthermore, since the purchase of the truck, I
have not been able to reverse in high range, only in low range. Trying
to reverse in high range only produces a loud whining sound and the
truck stands still. Since there is some major engine work to be done, I
might as well bite the bullet and get the transmission work taken care
of as well. I have a number of questions and would like to invite your
comments and suggestions. Thank you in advance for your assistance.
- What is the approximate cost of the engine and do you know anyone that
has one available
- Would that be the block only, or would that include the head as well
- Problem reversing: Is that more likely to be the transmission or the
reverser (my mechanic believes reverser - but then this is the 1st 52
GMS he has worked on).
- Do you know anyone in New Hampshire that has done such overhauls and
would be able and willing to take on this work?
