Hi Mike ,
Check the contact breaker gap , plug leads , plugs , and
gaps , then check the ignition timing . If your using resistor lead for the
plugs ,check the resistance , 12-15 K ohms per foot , often a cause of poor
starting . Better to use copper leads and resistor caps !
Might be an air leak on the carb or manifold , faulty pipe to vacuum unit .
Could be low compression , to make a compression tester , take an old plug ,
machine off the rollover that holds the insulator in and remove the guts
.Weld or braze a nut or threaded section onto the plug body {3/8" UNF}.
Salvage the brass insert from an old tyre valve and solder into the end of
the plug having first broken off the side electrode . Using the old type
Schrader valve remove the spring so the valve falls open no gravity ,screw
into insert . A flex brake pipe about a foot long and suitable adaptor can
now be used to connect to a 0-200 PSI pressure gauge . Screw in , crank up ,
the valve will hold the reading . unscrew , release the pressure , by thumb
nail on Schrader valve , ready for next cylinder .
Good luck Noel
