Steel blades/gun barrels made of many layers of metal hammer forged back
into themselves is referred to as "Damascus" steel. While very pretty
on a knife or a sword blade, Damascus steel shotgun barrels are not
strong enough to withstand the rigors of modern day shotshell loads.
Hence you often see on the box of shotgun shells the warning, "Not for
Damascus Steel barrels."
