Imagine my surprise when driving a M108 deuce wrecker and it steered
easily. Not quite as easily as with power steering, but not bad at all.
Certainly not bad enough to warrant a power steering upgrade. What's the
trick? Well, it is a 1953 REO and it does not have a huge multifuel
engine up front. Has a 331 gasser, which has to weigh a bunch less. The
entire vehicle is listed as being 20,000 pounds, which is porkier than a
M35A2 multifuel cargo truck, at 14,000 pounds, but the bulk of that
weight is to the rear, not over the front end.
I've heard rumors that the reason the multifuel deuces steer hard at
low speed is because the truck was not originally designed to pack that
much weight up front. When the multifuel appeared on the scene, the
steering changed. Seems to be true. Jim
