"R. Lee Ermey (born Ronald Lee Ermey, March 24, 1944) is an American actor best
known for his roles as military figures. He hosts Mail Call, a military history
program on the History Channel.

Biography
Born in Emporia, Kansas, Ermey enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1961. He
spent two years as a drill instructor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San
Diego, California, from 1965 to 1967. Ermey served a 14-month tour of Vietnam
in 1968, and then served two tours of duty in Japan. He was honorably
discharged in 1972, at the rank of Staff Sergeant. In 2002, he was given an
honorary promotion to Gunnery Sergeant by the U.S. Marine Corps.

After his discharge, Ermey studied acting at the University of Manila in the
Phillipines, where he was cast as a helicopter pilot in Apocalypse Now. He
played minor roles until 1987, when he was cast as the sadistic drill sergeant
in Stanley Kubrick's Full Metal Jacket.

Although he is best known for playing military figures, Ermey has also played
dramatic roles in Mississippi Burning and Prefontaine, and comedic roles in
Saving Silverman and Toy Story."
