Hmmmm......this is not as far-fetched as it might seem.
In 1981 in Spain, there was an outbreak of a mysterious disease which caused
neural damage, then paralysis, followed by agonising death. Over 600 people
eventually died, with many more left seriously ill. The Spanish medical
authorities tried to find a common denominator for the illness, at first thinking it
was some variant of Legionnaires disease Early on in the epidemic, the only
link that could be established was that the disease was confined to certain
neighborhoods, usually poor areas, but there were exceptions in some wealthy
areas, which only made the search for the cause more difficult.
Following some in-depth detective work, it was discovered that all the poor
families had recently bought cheap cooking oil from door-to-door salesmen. The
wealthier families had unknowingly used this oil which had been purchased by
their maids, who though they had spotted a way to save a few pesetas.
It turned out that the "cooking oil" had been mixed with tricresyl phosphate,
an aircraft engine lubricant. It seems that the source of this lubricant was
a DRMS in Spain, and unscrupulous buyers had bought this stuff cheaply and
flogged it as "cooking oil".
Not long after this discovery, DRMS rules on the disposal of paints, dopes
and lubricants were tightened considerably.
And the moral of all this? A-1 Steak Sauce is cheap at the price (-:
Kind regards....
