I have no knowledge of ryme or reason but Cushman made both types and they
were different. The military one is more rare and fetches more George
Washingtons.

I have to ask...What is a "civilian airborne" scooter? Did Cushman expect a
rush of parachuting, scooter-riding enthusiasts after WWII?

An authenic military airborne scooter did not have coil springs. Coil
springs were on a civilian airborne scooter.
Some people do paint the civilian ones up in OD and about 99% of the people
don't know the difference.
This is what the collector crowd says anyway.
