I've got a question; what is the purpose of the railing like things on the top sides on an ammo trailer? Also what is the purpose for the coal chute? Inquiring minds want to know.
Two good questions. The "coal chute" provides clearance for the pintle hook. These trailers are built to run in "trains," and the each have a pintle hook in the rear. Without the hole in the tailgate, the tailgate couldn't be lowered. The "rails" are supports for the canvas. Cheaper, lighter and more convenient than making the sideboards taller.
Hope this helps,
David Doyle
