Well, I finally drove the 5 Ton home that Ted
Hil's sold me last may. He very kindly kept it
tucked away among his other vehicles and didn't
complain a bit (Patient man Ted is...).
The truck ran like a top for the 200 mile trip.
There was a little bit of hesitation in 4th->5th
that I think was fuel related (perhaps user
error?). Given how long it sat, it's not
surprising. I did toss 16 oz of Cetane
Booster/fuel polisher in with a full tank of
fuel. However, the truck didn't let me down when
I had to merge onto various bits of highway. No
overheating, no oil leaks as far as I could tell
and what you'd expect from an M813A1.
Ted's guys fitted the GMA Vinyl top that ted
ordered for me. And I bought an extra tool box
from Ted so I could add additional lockable
storage to the right side. I figure I can mount
the pioneer kit over the fuel tank on the left
hand side.
I must say, you gents that are truckers, I kiss
the ground you walk on. Driving that 5 ton was
tiring. It was made worse by a spring seat that
needs adjusting and lubing. I need to figure out
how to adjust the height. More looking at the
manuals.
One odd thing was that some parts of Georgia's
highways happen to have pavement that matches the
harmonics of the 5 ton at around 45-50mph. That
sets up a nice see-saw motion that tends to build
and only dampens out if you get off the throttle
and then back on. I don't think it's parts
related, but I'll give the truck a close looking
over tomorrow assuming it stops raining.
Now for the inevitable fall out from some
neighbors. ;-) One however has seen it and
thought it was grand. But then she's that way. I
will however be able to begin work on my
secondary driveway that the 5 ton and ferret will
be stored on around the rear of the house. I'll
be able to get rid of the ruts.
Kudo's for Ted for selling me a nice truck...
