Always wondered this but never asked. Does anyone know the FS 595 colour
that the Hueys were painted in Vietnam? From photos it looks as though
they first started painting them a colour similar to the vehicles of the
time (FS 24087) when the Hueys wore the early-war white "ARMY" tail
markings, but later on when the tail-boom read "UNITED STATES ARMY" in
black, the body colour seems quite a bit lighter and browner than the
vehicles you see parked alongside them.
I see a stripped-out one just sold on www.govassets4sale.com in California
for $8500 or so. That one had an interesting history. It was a slick with
48th Assault Helicopter Company in Vietnam ("Blue Stars") from new, and
later served with 129th Assault Helicopter Company ("Bulldogs") in Vietnam
until returned stateside. Hope some collector or veteran's group got hold
of it. Hate to see it live out its days as a pigeon-roost in front of some
low-rent surplus outfit.
