That's where MPSron-3, MEU-5 and the Lincoln Carrier Strike Group come in.
The Abraham Lincoln and the 5 or so ships with it
were in HK, the've been ordered to move to the
area off the coast of Sumatra. Their ships,
aircraft and helo's will come in handy for
rescuing people stranded or injured on the many
small islands.
The 5th Marine Expeditionary Unit with the USS
Bonhamme Richard at it's head was at Guam as of
Wednesday, it's headed to the area off the coast
of Shri Lanka and should be there on Tuesday or
so.
Maritime Prepositioning Squadron 3 has had 8 of
it's 10 ships activated and ordered to the area
to provide it's water purification facilities
built in to 7 of it's 10 ships and the onboard
field hospital that can be "phased" ashore to
support humanitarian operations.
5 P3s are operating out of Diego Garcia and are
conducting extensive surveys of the damage to
determine what is needed where. Several more are
operating out of Thailand at the permission of
the Thai government. They've also opened their
doors to a US command group that is in charge of
the overall operation of this humanitarian
operation, that being Task Force 536.
Also, an advance unit of marines from Okinawa's
MEU forward deployed early on to get a ground
view of what the situation actually was.
6 C130s have begun shuttling supplies from
Okinawa to the affected areas. I expect there
will be more aircraft moving supplies in.
"Three disaster relief assessment teams are
either in place or moving into place. The first
arrived in Thailand this morning, a second will
arrive this afternoon in Sri Lanka, and a third
will arrive tomorrow in Indonesia."
