To keep from getting snow and heavy rain into the "mushroom", I added a 90
degree piece to the intake:

Being able to see the air intake is also helpful when driving off road when
it may become blocked with leaves etc.
Although, I did this independently years ago, I have seen this done on NG
deuces used in the movie "A time to kill". I think it is an Alabama National
Guard unit.
My current setup is a longer vertical piece (seen in other pictures), which
is part of my "5 ft fording ready" configuration. The plan is to make it
permanent and out of metal. The stand doubles as the breather for the
crankase.
