Decade's before MRE's existed, back when field rations came in OD tin
cans and the accessory pack contained four cigarettes and a wad of ass
wipe, we old-timer's opened the C-rats with the P-38 that hung from our
dog chain. Dumped the contents into a canteen cup, sprinkled Louisiana
Hot Sauce on everything, and heated it over a chunk of burning C-4.
When Charlie-4 wasn't available you could open one of those small tins of
peanut butter, squirt in a fair amount of insect repellant and stir to a
thick goo. Then you'd light this goo with two or three of those 'damp
climate matches' that came in the OD match books and it would burn like
sterno for a good five minutes.

Any of you old guys remember 'Grunt Pizza" ?? You'd cut one of those
round bread rolls in half; spoon some of the congealed tomato paste from
the can of "Spaghetti & Meat Sauce" over the cut rolls; open the small
can of cheese spread and lather that on top of it all. Next place it
all inside the foil accessory pack, then place that inside the cardboard
box the individual meal came in. Light the box with the OD match book
and let the pizza oven burn itself out. Carefully unwrap the foil
packet, and viola hot 'Grunt Pizza' ! Such culinary delights were then
capped off with a Lucky Strike Red.

My favorite was the B-2 unit 'cause it had the 'John Wayne Bars'. And
then there was -- drum roll please -- 'Pound Cake', and a can of real
Pineapple Bits !!! I've actually seen two guys with bayonets go after
each other 'cause it was "MY pound cake".

The meal that no body wanted was "Ham & Lima Beans". Those Ham &
Mother's were so bad even the mess hall dogs wouldn't eat 'em. After
the can of Fruit Cocktail was empty I'd afix it to the feed guide of my
M-60 LMG. Allowed the link belt to make a smoother ninety degree turn
and enter the feedway horizontal.
