Yesterday, a New York State judge decided against the NYS DMV in a court
case that has implications in this argument.
The DMV realized through internal investigations that of its 11,500,000
licensees, over 600,000 had used the wrong or invalid SSN when applying for
a license.
(One SSN had been used by over 1500 persons)
Letters were sent to the 600,000 persons, who were invited to restate their
SSN's. 250,000 still have not. The Puerto Rican Defense Fund (remember that
Puerto Ricans are US citizens, and don't have a dog in this fight) sued NYS
DMV claiming racial profiling. They won.
Now the US wants to issue cards that require proof of citizenship, in order
to qualify for what is approximately a driver's license.
What will happen in NY? Stay tuned.
