Don -

With due respect to Mr. Gill (whose post please see) the vendor he
suggested is a marine power specialty concern, which means their
products are going to be "pricey" in the extreme. Trust me, I know. I'm
a "boat guy" myself, with a 22 footer and a 30 footer. So, I notice that
NewMar, which Mr Gill refers you to, is afraid to even post their
"suggested list prices" on their Web page. I suggest you take a look at
www.mpja.com where you will find a couple of 24V to 12V DC-to-DC
converters. Their stock number 15457-PS at $79.95 is a unit that will
provide 25 amps/30 amp surge, and I can almost guarantee you that it
will be much less expensive than a "marine" unit. You do not need the
isolated ground feature found in the NewMar units because your HMV does
not have a positive ground (I don't know of any HMVs that have 24V
positive ground systems).

No slam against Mr. Gill intended, just a suggestion for a more
economical solution to your requirement. I have no connection with my
suggested source, I'm just a satisfied customer for about 25 years.

Generally speaking, I would use a DC-DC converter as opposed to tapping
12V from the "center tap" of the 24V battery bank. That eliminates any
possibility of unbalancing the charge on your 24V system unless, of
course, you are dealing with a system that has a separate 12V generator
(alternator) for each "half" of the 24V bank in which case the problem
should be moot. Flamers please note: I have seen the all arguments pro
and con about how to obtain 12V for equipment from a 24V system for a
lot of years on this forum. What I have said is MY opinion as a retired
"electronics guy", and I don't need to hear it all again.
