This method is actually way more common than most people
know....... every time you see a train go by, you are seeing it in
action. Diesel locomotives use the same idea. Big diesel engines
hooked to generators and electric traction motors driving each axle.
The older ones used DC current, and the new ones use AC. The
modern locos are generating from 4400 to 5000 HP. They have
been in use for many years and the modern ones are amazing. I
worked for two of the major railroads here in So Cal and took many
trips on all different locomotives. The new ones are incredible!
They have traction sensing, wheel spin control, speed sensers and
all kinds of other fancy stuff.
