Adding a tachometer can be done with stock 73-87 GM truck parts. Tachs were
a factory option, see one here http://tinyurl.com/74okt there is another
tach that incorporates the fuel gauge into the tach so a vacuum gauge or
clock can be used in the cluster, they are a bit rarer, seen them go on ebay
for $150-$400, see that type here http://tinyurl.com/cm3kr. Foraging your
local salvage yards should get you one, they were used in the Blazer,
Suburban, and Pickup. If you have a large truck salvage yard nearby, check
there as well the same tachs were used in the C series and early Kodiak
series 2 ton and up large trucks.
Most Delco Alternators have a Tach Signal terminal on the back, this can be
tapped this for use with the OEM GM tach and a variable resistor needs to be
installed so the tach can be calibrated.
I used to have a link to a website that showed the wiring and how to tap the
tach signal on the alternator, can't find it now. I subscribe to an Olds 350
Diesel discussion board. I know a couple of guys there have done it. I asked
one of them to email me details, I'll forward it to the list when I get it.
It was pretty simple as I recall though.
