BRAKES

Gentlemen ,
Shaft , transmission ,or pinion , brakes are not NEW !
The reasons they have not been commonly adopted are many !
Whilst several have been mentioned , one is the strain put on the diff
assembly !The loadings designed for are driving NOT driven !
The loadings on a conventional system are carried by the wheel studs , brake
back plate and thence the axle mountings {springs , trailing arms Etc }
MUCH research and development goes into the design of a brake system ,
factors such as , vehicle weight , cylinder bore size , drum / disc ,
diameter , width , lining material , heat dissipation Etc, Etc . ONE of the
aims of all of this is to achieve a GOOD balance between the various axels .
Simply adding more retarding force without VERY careful consideration of ALL
the implications and permutations of circumstances COULD result in a
potentially very dangerous situation arising !
BEFORE embarking on a modification of this type one should be aware of the
insurance implications and inform them of EXACTLY what one is proposing to
do AND be sure they understand !

One interesting aside with modern lining material is that it lasts longer ,
BUT being harder and more abrasive wears the discs or drums away . This is
also true of ceramic clutches where when changing a clutch one may well have
to reface the flywheel !

           PROGRESS ? Noel
