There are some companies that make "weights" that are basically leaded sleeves of heavy synthetic cloth that can easily be washed and that velcro's around a winch cable to provide such a bit of protection. Smaller winch cables are probably less of a danger than the bigger ones like on our MVs. The weights alone mean even more energy stored in the cable. Add to that the weight of the cable itself....
