Black out lights

Gents

I just recently got a new hood for my HMMWV. On the two yellow turn signal
light, the black out portion is now a solid white peice of plastic instead
of the clear with the two little white "V" lights inside. I assume this is
a new version but I'm curious as to when these first came out and what
advantage they have over the old ones.
