I work for the City of Phoenix, and drive all over town on a daily
basis, yesterday while going West on I-10 (Phx to LA) I saw probably
between 20 to 30 civilian flatbed semi's heading East carrying at first
what I thought were the new S&S 5-tons, but upon further examination
turned out to be Izuzus (spelling?). The trucks had long cargo beds
possibly in the 17 foot range, and of the style used on the earlier M35
or M54 type trucks not the newer style as seen on the S&S trucks. All
the equipment seemed to be engineering equipment, lot's of pontoon
stuff, and alot of BIG generators.
Since it was all brand new looking gear, and heading East away from the
Yuma Proving grounds, I'm ASSuming that this must be Japans response to
the Katrina disaster. Maybe they'll surplus them here, instead of
shipping them home. All vehicles and equipment were painted a solid
green color quite similiar to our CARC. The trucks while obviously
tactical vehicles, appeared to have civilian type cabs, with no special
military features such as folding windshields, and removable tops.
