My Dad had studied the Roman Empire in detail at school and used to say
that he could see our civilisation going the same way as the decandence
of Rome, although it will probably take us less than 800 years.......
One of the problems of the Roman Empire was that they made too many and
too onerous laws which turned the population into law breakers by
default ie, just being alive meant you were breaking one law or another.
It also means that people get a jaded attitude to the law,
which is what you are saying above, and that in turn makes
otherwise law abiding citizens into criminals.
If you haven't studied what happened when the US imposed petrol
rationing in WW2 then you will find it interesting reading. The
governments of the world noted what happened and have been happily
taxing petrol as high as they think they can get away with ever since.
The governments that took the most notice about the "people having
to have cars phenomenon" would appear to be British and Japanese, your
US prices are a very long way behind.
