My first thought was that you could but diesel would give off toxic
fumes. A brief google search found this in an ad for the lantern.
"The Petromax Lantern is a more durable and versatile alternative to
the Aladdin lamp. This lamp will burn multiple fuels including: lamp
oil, kerosene, diesel fuel, gasoline or aviation fuel. Caution: only
lamp oil and kerosene can be used inside a house or confined area.
Diesel fuel, gasoline and aviation fuel produce toxic fumes. "
