M54 EXTRA AIR FILTER

Dear List,
                I've been searching through the web viewing different
pictures of M54s in various states of disrepair to full restoration and I
have noticed that on SOME of the trucks large wing mounted Air filter they
have what I can best describe as a extra Air filter or cowling. I assume its
to stop leaves and things being sucked into the main filter? Why do some
trucks have them and others don't, my M54 hasn't got one?
