How do you set an engine to run hot other than by way of a different
thermostat?

Agreed on the Temps but that is still the cause of a lot of problems due to
the high temperature. It is very easy to run a humvee at 190-200 by making
some simple changes but the efficiency and the emmisions will change. AM
General referred to have them run at the higher temps to achieve certain
goals and set them to run hot.

..."......coolant temps over 200"........

Our trucks generally run over 200 when they are warmed up. I know
personally that my truck runs at about 220 constantly, fan on, fan
off......Thats just the way it is. Then again I had a truck that ran about
190 towing another truck, uphill, in the desert of 29 palms........so there
are differences. But generally they are set at 220.

I say trucks......Im talking HMMWV's in the Marines.

Hi Dave
Failures are no different than any other engine, just wear and tear and old
age. There are heat related issues such as cracked heads and blocks, fuel
system issues as well same as with any diesel injection system. The
cracking issues revolved around increasing the displacement up to 6.5 l. and
turbo supercharging it to produce more power without properly addressing
heat. The engines are very successfullly used in marine and stationary apps
also. If the engine is run with the coolant temp not over 200 the engine is
very reliable, above that your taking your chances.

What is the normal failure mode of these engines??? Do they simply lose
compression and die that way or ????

I hear of a lot of injection pump problems and cooling problems but the
cooling issues seem to be related to lousy radiators, etc, not necessarily
the engine itself.

Was this engine ever used in a marine application??
