Remember the battle for Kapyong where the Princess Patricia's Light Infantry
Held the high ground to the east of the MSR; the Australians held the high
ground to the west. This allowed the US Forces to withdraw under pressure
from the Chinese through the Canadian/Australian defensive line in order to
regroup and reorganize.
The Chinese launched wave after wave of "suicide" assaults against both
positions, finally resulting in the Australians being completely overrun,
while the Canadians called down Artillery support on their own positions to
suppress the Chinese who were advancing through the defended area. The
Canadians then counter-attacked with the bayonet and flung the Chinese back
down the hill for the last time, then held until relieved.
For this the PPCLI received the US Presidential Unit Citation for Valour,
which we wear to this day!!
Cheers!
Ian, ( Major(CF) retired; former PPCLI "boy soldier".)
