The sprags on the 5 tons give very little problems, they are big enough
that failure seldom occurs and the truck are heavy enough that lock-up
is also rare.
directional control is subject to the poppet valves on the reverse
shifter rail, and the valves are tempermental when maintenance is not
regular.
the piston moves. The norm is to move when going into reverse and
usually will snap to netural when moving out of reverse. THe forward
valve sticks, the transfer (front axle) goes to netural and you have 6x
in reverse and 4x in forward.
top of the transfer case you will find no air on either in the forward
gear selections. The cylinder is not in the back it is in the front
adajacent to the front drive shaft, right above the sprag case.
forward gears, the wheel will spin freely forward but not backward and
just the opposite in reverse. (ONLY reverse, netural counts as forward
and any other gear.) If this is not what happens, try adding air
pressure to the cylinder and see if that is not what fixes it....then
service the poppet valve, they can be taken apart and cleaned.
