See, stuff like this really bothers me. While it's ignorance, I'm still bothered.
Life story:
My step son, who up until a couple of years ago I really felt was nearly worthless, went off to the Navy in January of 2004. Up until then he really made my (and his mother's) life very difficult. Anyway, he went off to the Navy, a couple month's later, he was graduating from Great Lakes Training Center. I was not going to go, my buddies talked me into going anyway. When I got there...what a different kid. He was given weekend liberty, so we went down to Chicago for a bit. we stumbled into some freaks with spiked pink hair, etc. They were heckling him and as we walked away, he told me it was ok. I wanted to go kick their ass. He then went on to tell me that he was doing what he's doing so they have a right to do what they are doing...
I nearly started to cry.
