The A/C were built from 1946 through 1951. The crashed A/C was
retrofitted with turbine engines. AFAIK, none of the type were ever in
military service. The USAF used a similar, but larger, A/C of about the
same vintage for air-sea rescue service. It was known as the HU-16
"Albatross".
