When I first put my M1008 back together my GEN 1 light never came on either.
Both ALT lights should come on when the key switch is turned on. If my memoroy
serves me correct, the problem was Alt 1 (driver's side) didn't have a good
ground. It should be grounded to chassis. It was a small black wire with
white stripe. I didn't bother tracking down the other end of the wire, so I
just disconnected it and put my own ground to the intake manifold....and it has
worked fine ever since.
