Mike,
I get 3 or 4 of those fake e-bay messages every week. No company ever asks
you for credit card information unless you are purchasing something right
now from them. If you are ever in doubt about a message from e-bay, forward
the message to this address:
spoof@ebay.com
Within minutes you will receive a reply telling you whether it is fake or
not. Forwarding the message to e-bay also allows e-bay to notify law
enforcement of the ISP addresses of the scammers. Unfortunately, the message
appears so real that many people fall for it. They then get ripped off
badly.
What do you do about it?
Never trust anything sent to you, unless by a family member or friend. Even
then, be careful that they are aware of the scams out there.
Never click on an URL link and never open an unsolicited attachment.
It's a great shame that one has to be so wary, but there are many thieves
using keyboards.
