RE: US 4-Color Camouflage as applied to USMC vehicles.

Dear Listers,

There's a debate raging on various military modelling forums concerning the
USMC's use of four-color cammo patterns in the mid 70's to early 80's. The
arguments are not about the Corps' use of 4-color, because that has already been
verified by the relevant TM, which was NAVMC 2666.

The real mystery lies in the ACTUAL colors used by the Corps for their
version of the Army's "Winter Verdant", "Red Desert", "Gray Desert" etc
combinations.

One one side of the debate we have the people who say that the USMC used the
same color combinations as the Army, and that the instructions in the Army TM
of that time were applied (TB43-0209).

On the other side of the debate, various people have produced photos of USMC
vehicles which show a combination of colors that do not seem to have any
relation to the Army combinations.

The definitive answer should be in the USMC painting TM of that time, MCO
P4750-3B. But amazingly, no-one has this...not even the USMC itself (I wrote and
requested a copy).

In the absence of this MCO, it seems that we are down to plain old
speculation.
So here's where you come in. If you have knowledge of the USMC 4-color
patterns of that time, I'd really love to hear from you. Or if you have a copy of
the MCO........I'd be more that happy to buy/trade/beg for a look at it.

Just as an extra thought, the same problem will be raging in a few years
time, but will be concerned with the current USMC 3-color pattern. Why? Because
the Corps have stopped access to the current instruction, which is MCO
P4750/15-2. So if you have a copy of this TM, or access to it....once again, please let
me know.

Kind regards....
Ken
