CUCV Spedometer Sensor

My spedo died in the truck last week during some other related driveline
problems (driveshaft issues). Checking the system the cable is fine,
the spedo gear that inserts into the transfer case is fine, but the
plastic gear inside the transfer case that the pickup rides on is shot
(or gone would be a better word). Has anyone ever replaced the plastic
gear that is inside the transfer case, if so is it difficult to do?
