Mark,

That should be the right plug to fit into the socket on a tractor. You
don't really need the plug on the other end. It should be easy to remove
with a screwdriver. That would leave you with a cable with seven bare
wires, probably color-coded. The easiest way to handle your towing needs
would be to take along a 12 volt test light. Plug you cable into the
tractor, ground the test light lead, turn on the tractor lights, and
look for a wire on the cable that is hot. Turn off the tractor lights
and check the same wire again. It should be dead now. You now have the
wire that you need to connect to the tow dolly for running lights. I
would guess that the tow dolly has a flat utility trailer plug on it.
Buy a mating plug at an auto parts store. The brown wire on this plug is
probably the tail/running lights. Connect the wire from your tractor
cable that you identified as the running lights to the brown wire on the
trailer plug. Do the same test/connect for the left and right turn
signals. The tractor may have a separate circuit for the brake lights.
You will need to step on the brake pedal and see if any of the unused
wires in the cable become live. If so, you will need to set up a
separate brake light. Simply clamp a standard boat/utility trailer light
onto the rear of the dolly and run a wire from the cable to this light.
Of course, you will need to make sure that the trailer is properly
grounded to the tractor, and that all of your connections are good. This
is a quick way to set up what you need. You can go on from there to
become as elaborate as you want.

Subject: [MV] Trailer electrical hookup

Folks -

This is not MV, so delete if you wish. You are the only truckers I know,
however
- hence my asking this list.

I am going to have to drive home a Ford C8000 semi truck from about 700
miles away. I will be driving my Mustang to it pulling a car tow dolly.
On the return trip, the truck will be pulling my mustang on the dolly.
My dilemma is how to interface the truck trailer electrical hookup with
the tow dolly lights.

If somebody could point me to a web resource with the pinout of the
truck hookup, I would be grateful. Also, is this ebay item:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4608705563

the right part to hook up to the truck electrical jack?

Thanks!

Mark
