I had similar problem that you describe when I got my stuart tank. I
decided on a commercial civilian volvo and painted it military. The commercial
trucks drive better, are safer and overall much better suited for what you are
doing than a 5 ton.
A single axle truck should be able to handle a DUKW with no problems. You
could probably even use a medium duty truck like a f-650 or DT-466.
What does the DUKW weigh?
