The one factor that has not been mentioned is the speed governing which MUST
be to close tolerance . Small variations of speed will cause dramatic
changes of voltage , which will damage some equipment .
Speed should be held at better than 5% of rated speed for all loads . A free
throttle will give rise to dangerous over voltages ! The simplest way to
check your speed is by wiring a frequency meter into the system .
Four pole alternators will be spun at 1800rpm @60cycles .
two pole at 3600rpm .
