I had similar symptoms on my '72 Elcamino SS (454, TH400) It would do the
same things you describe, with one difference: it would act normally if
accellerated in a sporting manner(gas pedal almost on the floor). Accellerating with
the gas pedal on the floor would result in copius amounts of wheel spin. I was
told that a seal was leaking inside the trans that controlled the shifting(a
servo seal, maybe?) and that this was a common problem.
The Elcamino was sold years ago.... Wish I still had it, but would probably
be dead if I had kept it.
