Hi Jim ,
Glenn has pretty much said it ! If the engine is running so so
on the right bank then the pump would seem to be OK . Try slackening the
pipes to each injector on the left bank in turn and see what effect it has
whilst running ? If the smoke stops and the revs don`t drop then there`s
your bad cylinder ! If 2 adjacent cylinders are bad then it could be a head
gasket !
You could also remove the injectors and refit on the pipes so you can see
the spray pattern , BUT BE WARNED keep well away from the spray as the
microscopic droplets can under pressure penetrate the skin and cause BIG
TROUBLE ! OR take to a diesel shop for testing !
A commpression test will tell you if the pressure is low and therefore no
combustion . A gauge that reads 800 psi or so and a suitable hose , brake or
hydraulic , with an old dismantled ( gut less ) injector as an adaptor will
do the job ! Ideally it should have a non return in the end so as not to
increase the chamber size and give low readings . You should see about 400
psi .
                                 Good luck Noel
