Wondering about a fuel filter for a M38A1

Does anyone know where I can find a fuel filter for my
1953 M38A1? Or can I get a fuel filter from any auto
part store? I just got the carb. installed and now
it's acting like it may have a fuel filter problem,
chugging and back firing, then it dies. any thought or
idea will help.
