Hi Fellas,
Whilst the most likely cause of a runaway is the injection
pump failing to govern the speed DO NOT forget that a diesel WILL run on
almost any hydrocarbon of which engine oil is one and it DOES HAPPEN ! Blow
past, due to worn rings , or bad stem seals on the valves can cause oil to
accumulate in the intake and when this accumulation reaches a critical point
it is sucked into the engine , often with frightening results !
The ONLY way to stop the engine is to cut off the air supply QUICKLY , if
your brave enough to stick around !!!! Catastrophic failure is quite common
on these occasions so running is quite a normal course of action (
especially if the machine is not yours ) !
STOUT timber or thick metal sheet over the intake is your best hope NEVER
USE YOUR HAND even if it`s your vehicle !!

                            Good Luck Noel
