Half track direction of track, which way is right?

I am hoping to put the track on my half track soon and can't figure out
which way is the direction the track should face. Have looked at the half
track at the Ft. Jackson museum and I thing each one is on different.

And remember, don't assume I know anything. Use lots of small, descriptive
words.
